This section, operated by Lieutenant Greg Post with the assistance of Sergeant Keith Jenkins, provides members of the department with in-service training through a program that is recognized as a standard of excellence throughout the state.  Together they ensure that all employees receive the required training for their job assignment.  All officers in the state of Georgia are required to complete yearly training in order to maintain peace officer certification.  The Brunswick Police Department is committed to providing officers with state of the art training in all areas of law enforcement and communication.  One of the tools used to accomplish this is the FATS system, a highly advanced computerized system that helps officers prepare for the many scenarios they may encounter and aids them in the development of "shoot or don't shoot" skills.  These two officers are also responsible for the in-depth training of new recruits before they are released to a Field Training Officer (FTO) in the Patrol section for evaluation and further development of street skills.  New recruits are required to ride with their FTO until they have mastered all the skills required to perform patrol duties.

Records Department  267-5559

The initial point of contact with the department for many citizens, this section not only furnishes copies of accident or incident reports, but is also the section which handles employment background checks.  Incident or accident reports may be obtained in person from the Records Department Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.  The cost is twenty-five cents per page.  Fingerprinting services are provided for the public on Wednesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 9-11 am and 2-4 pm for a cost of $5.00 per set of two cards.

Evidence Department

Officer Colleen Eichman

267-5559, Ext. 1220

Maintained by Officer Colleen Eichman, the evidence section is responsible for returning items to property owners when possible, maintaining detailed records of stored evidence, and disposing of or destroying evidence when ordered by the court.  As the department can easily acquire thousands of pieces of evidence in a year, this is an extremely essential job.  Officer Eichman also assists in Municipal Court security when needed and supervises community service workers.

Civilian Katrina Patterson

Katrina Patterson

267-5559, Ext. 1234

Civilian employee Katrina Patterson has the responsibility of applying for accreditation as well as ensuring that the department maintains required standards.  She is also responsible for the department's application for state certification from the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.  Certification is a proven method of helping law enforcement agencies determine their current level of overall performance and to improve upon it.  Certification status represents a significant professional achievement and acknowledges that a department has successfully implemented sound and effective policies and procedures.  In addition, Ms. Patterson is responsible for submitting monthly Uniform Crime Reports to the Federal Bureau of Investigations and various other state and federal agencies.  The UCR program was developed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police in 1929 to meet a need for reliable, uniform crime statistics for the nation.  The FBI was tasked with collecting, publishing, and archiving these statistics in 1930.  These statistics are used to generate various reports which are available to the public.  In addition, Ms. Patterson coordinates the Brunswick Police Department's Chaplain Program and provides clerical and other support to its members.

The Information Systems Manager handles the installation, maintenance and use of all of the department's computer hardware, software and communications systems.  The Brunswick Police Department is connected to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer network system, as well as the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) network, which enables officers to verify vehicle registration and drivers license information, check for wanted persons, and check stolen property and vehicles.  Officers also make use of highly specialized law enforcement software (such as traffic accident reporting software, imaging programs, and facial reconstruction and identification software) to assist them in their duties.
